Opened to coincide with Frieze Week, Ryder has returned to Mayfair's Hignell Gallery to stage an exhibition of new mixed media sculptures and drawings.
Ryder is recognised today for her Lady Hare sculptures, which have occupied her imagination for several years. Developed as a counterpart to ancient Greek mythology's Minotaur, these hybrid sculptures have the body of a woman – based on her own body – and the head of a hare. The physical sculptures forge powerful images charged with a poignancy and emotion that goes well beyond figurative representation.
In her second solo exhibition at Hignell Gallery, Ryder will introduce the new mythical character currently dominating her oeuvre. Starting on the ground floor, the exhibition journey will continue in the basement of the gallery, which will be transformed for the duration of the exhibition into a giant multi-sensory installation called Temple to 200 Rabbits.
Although Ryder usually works on a monumental scale, Tepozteco will showcase a selection of more intimate pieces, highlighting her diverse interests and technical skill.
