Fortnum's X Frank 2017, Fortnum & Mason

Renowned worldwide for its preserves, luxury hampers and cream teas, Fortnum & Mason has reigned over Piccadilly since 1707. But the international crowds don't just flock there for the food, but for the art as well, especially during Frieze Week.

This autumn, Fortnum & Mason are, once again, collaborating with British art collector Frank Cohen to present an exhibition of work by renowned Scottish artist John Bellany (1942 - 2013).

Bellany rejected the fashion for abstract, American influenced painting predominant in the 1960s, to embrace a rather more figurative approach. However, as the years passed by – Bellany suffered from severe depression and alcoholism for most of his life – his work became darker, more turbulent. During these tumultuous years, his paintings confronted issues of mortality and immortality, good and evil and the individual's capacity for survival.

Curated by Robert Upstone, former Head of Modern British Art at Tate, the upcoming exhibition, drawn from Cohen's extensive private collection, will feature paintings from all periods of Bellany’s illustrious career. It will be the largest exhibition of the artist’s work since his death in 2013, so catch it while you can.
