Converse x Dazed 2015 competition
If you want to see into the crystal ball of contemporary art in Britain then look no further. The Royal Academy, London has teamed up with Converse x Dazed to host the finalists of the fifth Converse x Dazed Emerging Artists Award, one of the most prestigious prizes in contemporary British art. The judges have whittled down the competition to five finalists and each has been awarded £1000 to create a site-specific work in any discipline of their choosing.
Converse x Dazed Emerging Artists Award judges
The judging panel is fittingly distinguished, and includes sculptor Steven Claydon, curator Sarah McCrory, legendary contemporary art dealer and gallerist Javier Peres, and the RA Director of Artistic Programmes, Tim Marlow.
Converse x Dazed competition finalists
The finalists are no lightweights either. All five promise to intrigue and delight in equal measure. First, there’s Jonathan Trayte, an RA trained sculptor who combs Chinese cash and carry stores for inspiration. He promises his installation will be an intense immersive world like “a never-ending candy store or Middle Eastern bazaar”. Rachel Pimm works across video, sculpture and performance, and interrogates the boundaries between the natural and artificial worlds. Working with bioengineers, her piece explores rubber tree clones and the factories that make them. Laurence Lek brings his interest in architecture to the digital sphere, creating whole utopias within video games to allow viewers into his fantasy world. Tamsin Snow & Sarah Tynan met at the RCA and collaborate on large-scale constructions, remaking buildings in unexpected contexts to raise questions about the politics of social space. Finally, performance artist Patrick Cole presents theatrical set pieces in strange symbolic landscapes, building dystopian narratives inspired by sci-fi. Often satirical in spirit, his work looks set to ruffle some feathers at the RA London exhibition.
If you are interested in the next generation of YBAs or looking to discover new talent, this contemporary art exhibition is a treat.
