This painting is one of a series of great female nudes painted by Italian Expressionist painter, Amedeo Modigliani, for his life-long art dealer, Leopold Zborowski. Its provocative subject matter famously caused a scandal nearly a century ago when it was exhibited at Modigliani’s only one-man show at the Galerie Berthe Weill in Paris.
Nudes are the most desirable subjects in all of Modigliani’s work, and this one sold for $170 million in 2015 at Christie's New York.
