The 10 most expensive paintings in the world
As the art world buzzes with the busiest sales week of the year, we round up the 10 most expensive paintings ever sold
Pablo Picasso’s Les Femmes D'Alger (Version O) fetched $179.3 million at a Christie's auction in 2015, making it one of the most expensive artworks ever sold at auction.
This painting is inspired by Delacroix’s Les Femmes D’Alger, of which Picasso painted 15 different versions, with O being the final in the series.
Picasso began his first version of the series six weeks after hearing of the death of his lifelong friend and rival Henri Matisse.
The 'oriental' subject of this series of paintings evokes Matisse's style as well as that of Delacroix. Both artists were renowned for their images of langorous, voluptuous women known as odalisques.
