Tony Award-winning War Horse director Tom Morris combines popular culture with pure oddity, drawing on a musical theatre canon spanning Les Mis to cult 90s hit Shockheaded Peter, to tell the story of disfigured hero, Grinpayne, who is loved by a blind girl.
Based on Victor Hugo's 1869 novel L’homme qui rit (The Man Who Laughed), the show bridges fairytale and freak show with gleeful inventiveness. Songs, puppetry and visual flair take audiences into the circus, and into they mystery of how Grinpayne got his bloodied grin.
The Bristol Old Vic production was set in a 17th Century mythical version of Bristol, with a stage framed by a vast grinning mouth. The Grinning Man will be reworked for a specially configured space in Tragalgar Studios, so expect spectacle and strangeness.
