Since the centenary of his birth in 2011, Tennessee Williams seems to be undergoing a major revival. As a major regional tour of Cat on Hot Tin Roof closed last month, the Young Vic announce a triple bill of his shorter works under the heading Man.
One-act plays
Not many people know that the prolific playwright wrote over 70 one-act plays during his lifetime, and these three explore the same themes of isolation, sexuality and identity, as his longer works. Of the three we are most intrigued by The Strangest Kind of Romance, which involves a man falling in love with a cat, and might offer some relief from the melancholic tone of the evening.
Experimental theatre directors
It sounds like these three pieces have been painstakingly selected and curated by young director Finn Beames, winner of the prestigious Genesis Future Director’s Award. With a background in genre-busting modern opera, here he is complementing Williams’ romantic texts with the music of Bled White Boy, who describe their melodies as ‘Between beautiful and uncomfortable.’ We expect that the ‘Man’ trilogy will be the same, an unmissable theatrical experience.
