It’s over fifteen years since the explosive premiere of Patrick Marber’s play, and Closer has now been performed worldwide and adapted into a star-studded film. There’s obvious something about this criss-crossing love story which captures the hearts and minds of audiences, and now the Donmar opens a new production this Spring.
Amid such high expectations and unavoidable comparisons with the screen version, they have assembled an enviable line-up for both cast and creative team. The headliner is brooding pin-up Rufus Sewell (bearing a striking resemblance to the film’s Clive Owen), followed by Nancy Carroll and Oliver Chris, both stalwarts of the London stage. Lastly there is recently graduated rising star Rachel Redford, taking on her most high-profile role to date; definitely one to watch.
The key to the success of this production will be the chemistry between these performers, in a play which relies so much on knife-edge changes of heart, split passions and intense encounters. David Leveaux is a specialist in such closely knitted romantic relationships, known for his effective stagings of many Pinter classics. This is unmissable for anyone who loves the film, or watching the twists and turns of our lives played out before your eyes.
Booking opens for Donmar's upcoming season on the 26th of November
