Caryl Churchill's trail-blazing 2002 play comes to the Bridge Theatre in a new production directed by Polly Findlay. Roger Allam (ITV's Endeavour) plays Salter, the father who uses science to start afresh. Colin Morgan (BBC's Merlin; Netflix's The Crown) plays all of his sons, genetic multiples of one original, Bernard.
Using science fiction to challenge theatrical form, Churchill interrogates perceptions of belonging and belief to expose the fragility of the father son relationship. The sense of multiplicity in this two-man play offers set designer Lizzie Clachan creative prospects for the aesthetic of this new production. Previous stagings have used mirrors and screens, so we look forward to seeing how A Number plays out on the Bridge stage.
