This winter, the Polka Theatre is restaging the Toby Hulse adaptation of the classic, promising fun for all the family. The story follows the adventures of Ratty and Mole, two friends of different species who bond despite their different ways of life. They face trouble, though, when the fad-crazed Toad endangers the environment with his love of machines; eventually Toad sees the error of his ways and seeks guidance from his friends. It's easy to see how this tale, with its themes of climate change and new friendships, is relevant to a contemporary audience. Roman Stefanski, director of the play, expressed his desire to explore ‘how we can be better humans through the brilliant animal characters’ of The Wind in the Willows.
The imaginative staging reflects the environmental theme, with costumes being crafted from recycled products such as bubble wrap. The audience will be fully immersed in the world of Ratty and Mole thanks to the birds, leaves and snowflakes that will whirl around them as the seasons pass onstage. Modern music and contemporary costumes give a new feel to this traditional story, tailored for children and parents alike.
The Polka Theatre is one of the only theatres in the UK to be exclusively targeted at children. Stefanski explained: ‘we strive to spark the imagination, stir the emotions and fuel a sense of discovery in all children’. This funny, heart-warming and educational piece sounds like the perfect winter trip.
