Sushi and sashimi, udon and izikaya: how to do Japan in London
Koya evokes the traditional feel of a Japanese udon-ya with its blonde wood counter dominating the long, narrow space with chefs on one side and diners on the other. There are just 25 stools so expect to wait at busy times.
The breakfasts are a revelation. Innovative bowls of udon and rice porridge are a big draw.
There's an earthy udon broth with fried egg, bacon and shiitake mushrooms. Okayu is rice porridge, accompanied by a soft boiled egg, spring onion and sweet, salty marinated shiitake mushrooms. It makes a soothing East Asian start to the day.
Available too is the more usual Japanese morning meal of grilled fish, miso soup, rice and pickles.
Throughout the day standout dishes include their udon with mushrooms and walnut miso, kinoko, and some creative fish dishes.
Staff are friendly and happy to explain. This is a really authentic taste of Tokyo in London.
The brand new branch at Bloomberg Arcade is far larger with the same tranquil Japanese minimalist decor and counter dining. It is open from 7am for breakfast.
