Sushi and sashimi, udon and izikaya: how to do Japan in London
Tonkotsu’s ramen is peerless. They are actually staging a takeover at Anzu during January and February.
Anzu, a refined Japanese brasserie from the same founders, takes small plates to the next level – the king crab and pork take on Tonkotsu’s gyoza are delicate yet funky. Try punchy kara-age fried chicken with umami-laden katsuobushi seasoned fries.
The best dish of all is a novel twist on nasu dengaku: yuzu-miso-marinated aubergine, the skinned, squidgy little pieces of flesh are given an uncanny taste of doughnut glaze with sweet sesame. So moreish.
Main dishes including sea bass fragrant with dashi and adorned with shimeji mushrooms and micro herbs please aesthetically too.
Service is attentive and charming, though we do find this chic, St. James spot lacks soul.
Nevertheless the lunch set menu is good value and for dry January the refreshing yuzu lemonade is perfect.
