Pussy Riot's 'Punk Prayer' launched them into the public consciousness back in 2012. In the wake of their protest, this artistic collective and their brightly coloured clothes became an emblem for feminist rights and of freedom from oppression.
In her talk 'Fashion Attack: The Style of Pussy Riot' Dr Claire Shaw will trace the aesthetic of Pussy Riot throughout contemporary Russian history, considering how their clothes reflect a tradition of fashion as rebellion. She will also look at the recent idea of ‘glamour’ politics, engaging with the concept that in Russia fashion has become a key area of political comment.
In doing so Shaw casts new light on how we should consider fashion; here it becomes more than items to be worn, it is a comment upon society and a tool of political protest.
For those interested in the intelligent side of fashion, this talk is a must.
