Woolf was a writer of difficult books. Of intense, short, bewildering books, borne from a thicket of thoughts. And Mrs Dalloway is the one to pick up first.
Woolf was part of London's famous Bloomsbury Group, who have left a lasting impression on the city and its art. Her 1925 work is a serious contender for the most London novel ever written, with characters criss-crossing a painstakingly accurate map of the city. Whilst Dublin has Bloomsday to celebrate James Joyce's Ulysses there's still a campaign to celebrate Dallowday in London on 13 June, the day the events of the book are set.
