Sheila Girling is a name you may not have come across before, but her British art star husband Anthony Caro, Henry Moore's assistant, is someone you probably have come across. However, this dazzling modernist deserves your full attention with her bright hues and textural daring. Moving elegantly between figuration and abstraction, Girling actually started out life wanting to become a doctor before her mother urged her towards a safer artistic career.
Sheila Girling painter & Anthony Caro sculptor
Girling first met Caro at the Royal Academy, when the young sculptor accidentally used her drawing board. While he was all about form, she took on the challenge of colour. It was even Girling that first added the shock of bright colour to Caro's industrial sculptures, which changed the face of modern British art forever. Their fantastic collaboration lasted 64 years, with tremendous results.
Annely Juda Fine Art exhibition
This Sheila Girling show at Annely Juda focuses on the works made in the 1990s when the painter was playing with interiors, landscape forms and whimsical creatures. These dynamic planes of colour, where handmade papers and paint meet, are Girling's last series of work and reveal an assured, bold artist at the height of her power.
A British art heroine worth getting to know - don't miss this intimate show at the heart of Mayfair.
