Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone has been a feature on the New York art scene since the 1990s with his mixed-media magic. Thanks to the backing of powerful gallerist Barbara Gladstone, who also has star artists like Sarah Lucas, Anish Kapoor and Philippe Parreno under her wing, Rondinone has gone from strength to strength.
Ugo Rondinone paintings & technique
From sculpture, painting, and sound to video and photography, Rondinone is experimental to say the least and often breaches the divide between fiction and reality.
Sadie Coles exhibition
Last time around at Sadie Coles in 2012, Rondinone treated us to a new series of mandala paintings. These circular canvases with hypnotic and hazy yellow rings radiated heat like beating suns and beguiled visitors to Sadie Coles HQ. Get to grips with these abstract works by thinking of them as somewhere between Colour Field painting, Op Art and Kenneth Noland's famous target paintings.
We predict a similarly sunny disposition to Rondinone's 2015 Sadie Coles show.
