Winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017 announced
From the murky depths of the Indian Ocean to the lush forest canopy of Uganda’s Kibale National Park, travel the world this winter at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year
CATEGORY WINNER 2017, BEHAVIOUR: MAMMALS
Dozens of sperm whales mingled noisily off Sri Lanka’s northeast coast, stacked as far down as photographer Tony could see. In the photograph, a rare congregation of dozens, perhaps hundreds, of social units can be seen – a sign, Tony says, that the populations are recovering since whaling was banned in 1986. Tactile contact is an important part of a sperm whale social life, and blizzards of skin flakes coming off the whales mingled with thick clouds of dung.
