Whoopi Goldberg will be back in the habit to play Deloris Van Cartier for the first time since starring in the successful Sister Act film and its sequel in the 90s. With an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony she is showbusiness royalty, with a whopping voice and acting talents to match. She was a producer when Sister Act the musical first premiered in the West End in 2009 and will also be producing the new version of the show.
Goldberg will be joined on stage by homegrown comedy queen Jennifer Saunders, who will bring some Absolutely Fabulous grace to the role of Mother Superior. Along with an illustrious career in comedy featuring the French and Saunders sketch shows and hit sitcom Ab Fab, Saunders has impressed on stage (most recently in Blithe Spirit, which transfers to the West End in spring 2020). But Sister Act will be Saunders' first time in a musical.
Sister Act the musical features original music written by eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, who is behind the soaring soundtracks in Aladdin and Enchanted. The show mirrors the plot of the hit 1992 film, celebrating friendship and overcoming adversity. It follows disco diva Deloris whose life changes when she is witness to a murder. To protect her identity, Deloris must hide in the last place people would expect to find her... a convent. After the initial culture clash and some disapproval from the Mother Superior, the diva-turned-nun bonds with her fellow sisters and learns something important about herself, too.
