The powerful play follows a schoolgirl at Kibeho College in Rwanda in 1981 who claims to see visions of the Virgin Mary. Nobody believes her, but the visions continue, with Mary appearing to warn the girl of imminent danger and suffering in Rwanda. Then other students start seeing the apparitions, and the predictions suddenly feel true.
Our Lady of Kibeho has been hailed one of the best theatre shows of the 21st century (The Guardian). It was named 'the most important play of the year' by The Wall Street Journal when it was first staged in New York in 2014, and the play is now being staged in London for the first time, in a remount of Royal & Derngate's production earlier this year. The production opened in Stratford to glowing four and five star reviews, with critics hailing it 'astonishing', 'atmospheric and fascinating' and 'haunting and intelligent'.
