Amber Davies may be best known as one half of 'Kem and Amber', last year's winners of ITV's Love Island, but she is also a trained musical theatre actor. No doubt the cult appeal of the reality TV show will attract plenty of Gen Z fans to see her West End debut.
Davies is joined by seasoned stage actors Natalie McQueen (Kinky Boots, Wicked, Les Misérables) and Bryan Conley (Hairspray, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang).
9 to 5 The Musical is an adaptation of the hit 1980 film with its Oscar, Tony and Grammy-nominated score by queen of country music, Dolly Parton. The show, which has already impressed on Broadway, will be directed by award-winning Broadway regular Jeff Calhoun.
It tells the story of three female office workers in 1979 who are fed up of their 'sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot' boss. Together they hatch a plan to remove him from the situation and take over. Cue much raucous comedy as the co-workers end up keeping their boss captive and taking over the company. Productivity and profits soar, but the precarious kidnap can't last.
While the film and Broadway production of 9 to 5 are infectiously feelgood, bouyed by Parton's bright score, the trope of a misogynistic boss has fresh pertinence in a post Me Too era.
