In 2002 a powerhouse electronic triumvirate formed in Berlin. Sascha Ring (A.K.A Apparat), Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary (A.K.A Modeselektor) collaborated to create Moderat; an exceedingly elusive amalgam with a sound that refuses to be pigeonholed.
The fact that they're playing Koko the 11 and 12 December (12 now sold out) is a bit of a miracle, considering Apparat barely escaped a motorcycle crash in September . 'In an interstellar burst, I’m amazed that I survived' he exclaimed recently.
Moderat's music album took 7 years to perfect, with this gap of time separating the release of their first EP and their self-titled debut. The perfectionism of these artists proved to be worthwhile as the LP received huge critical success. This prominence has been enjoyed particularly with their lead single, the infectious Rusty Nails.
Artfully snaking through genre divides, they are a group who have been gradually labeled as 'Minimal Techno', 'IDM' (Intelligent Dance Music) and 'Glitch' before critics finally settled on the giant umbrella term of Electronic. This evasive settling aptly depicts the diversity of their sound.
Two years after their self-titled album, Resident Advisor -the world's largest online electronic music publication- voted Moderat #1 Live Act of the Year. With the recent release of their second album II in August, you'll have the opportunity to experience this award-winning performance first-hand as they embark on a global tour in early 2014. Alongside label-mates Anstam, the trio will play at Camden’s singular Koko, guaranteeing a show that is possibly award deserving, but certainly unique.
