If you've seen Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive , you'll remember the opening minutes as Ryan Gosling drives down the twilit L.A. streets. And if you remember this you will undoubtedly remember the song which is playing, a neon love letter to the 80s.
This is Kavinsky, a middle-aged Parisian Producer/DJ who has risen to mainstream prominence after the success of Refn’s feature. With 30 million YouTube views and counting on this song Nightcall, he has gone onto release a critically beloved debut album Outrun.
Kavinsky states that sound featured on this LP is a consolidation of all the 80s movies he watched growing up; a sound which has an inseparable relationship with image. For this reason, every song he has released seems to aurally conjure a red convertible driving Jean Claude Van Damme/ Sylvester Stallone en route to save a curly-haired heroine.
The artist’s name is itself a character that he has developed through a series of music videos. Kavinsky is a jock who, after crashing his Ferrari Testarossa in 1986, reincarnates as a zombie in 2006. Adventure ensues and in the high-tiered, unique environs of Camden Town’s Koko you can join. Having cut his gigging teeth alongside Daft Punk, The Rapture and Justice, Kavinsky is no rookie performer; and with the thematic mystique crafted around him in mind, this will be anything but a simple DJ set.
