Annie Mac’s career in radio began in the backseat, as a producer and a voice for jingles. When she received he own Radio 1 show in 2004, few could have predicted how quickly she would become one of the station’s greatest assets. After broadcasting her first live mix in 2006, she gradually became the BBC’s foremost dance music expert. Now the host of both a lively Friday night slot and a genre-hopping chill out show on Sundays, she is well on her way to national treasure status. Unlike many of her hands-off contemporaries, she has become a DJ in the mould of John Peel, Annie Nightingale and Gilles Peterson, forging a career in music beyond the studio.
As well as regularly playing clubs herself, since 2009 she has curated Annie Mac Presents, which provides a platform for both established and up and coming artists in electronic music. This March, it will take place in London’s KOKO, for what she has announced as the last of the year. Book fast – February’s date has already sold out, the tickets are moving fast.
Beginning at 10pm and running all the way to 4am, AMP fuses the atmospheres of gig and club night. The line-up is only revealed on the day before, but previous acts give a taste of the fare one can expect. She hosted Disclosure two years before their huge success with Settle, and has also showcased Skream, Erol Alkan, Mike Skinner, Katy B and Jessie Ware. Most iterations feature a couple of big names and a handful of curious new artists, running the whole gamut of the electronic spectrum. Expect a mixture of DJs and live bands, and the tantalizing prospect of Mac taking to the decks herself to deliver one of her famously eclectic mixes.
