After a number of well received mix-tapes her debut single ‘2 On’ was something of a breakout moment - it stayed at number 1 on the Billboard Rhythmic Charts for four weeks and brought her firmly into the gaze of the R&B world. Now armed with her new album, Aquarius, she’s touring the UK this Spring.
Aquarius is an atmospheric record replete with pared-down snares and echoing cries overlaid with Tinashe’s swaggering, coquettish delivery. On the weaving, snapping All Hands On Deck Tinashe is in full siren mode: You took a good girl and you turned me oh so bad/kiss the old me goodbye/She’s dead and gone. But don’t think she can only do seductive bravado - songs like Thug Cry are more classic R’N’B and show off her stylistic range. Bated Breath too brings out more of the balladeer in Tinashe with its long, contemplative outro.
