Over the past half-decade, ‘going electronic’ has become an ubiquitous trend in indie; as Dylan once traded his acoustic guitar for an electric one, droves of bands are tossing aside their guitars for synthesizers and computer-conveyed beats. At worst, it can seem like a desperate attempt to stay relevant.
No such fears with The Do. With their third album Shake, Shook, Shaken, the Franco-Finnish duo have become one of the mot hotly tipped bands playing today. This is no simple augmentation , but a complete transformation. Slow-burners like ‘Nature Will Remain’ have gained poignancy through their rich palette, while the upbeat likes of ‘Despair, Hangover and Ecstasy’ and ‘Keep Your Lips Sealed’ glide elegantly on synthetic beats. By forsaking non-electronic instrumentation, Olivia Merilahti and Dan Levy have filled their previously greyscale world with colour.
In advance of the album’s international release, The Do return to the London to play at Camden’s KOKO. Expect a euphoric evening of irresistible hooks and widescreen melodies, delivered with conviction and vitality. This is contemporary pop at its very best.
