Grace Jones has a lifetime ban from Walt Disney World in Florida. That's how punk she is: she got naked onstage in the magical kingdom. An oppressively religious upbringing means that Jones has a rebellious streak that has found fruitful expression in her modelling career, her influential style, and (of course) her music.
Her performative nature has found her taking mainstream film roles, most memorably as a powerful villain in the James Bond film A View to a Kill. While she doesn't tend to throw henchmen out of zeppelins during her live gigs (last time we checked), she cuts a similarly forceful figure at the microphone.
This September, the seemingly ageless Jones will be headlining Afropunk, a festival that celebrates multiculturalism and diversity by emphasising political awareness and self-empowerment. Among those joining her will be Laura Mvula and indie rock band The Noisettes. We dare you to stand right at the front of the crowd and see if you can catch her eye.
