With her theatrical tendencies and gloriously eclectic sensibilities, the American singer is reminiscent of charming eccentrics Regina Spektor and Bjork, though she’s less obviously bizarre than either.
Avant-pop isn’t really an adequate description for her music, but it’s the term currently in use. Holter pairs an ear for melody with highly experimental propensities - and as a musical composition graduate of the prestigious Californian performing arts university CalArts, she really knows what she’s doing.
Have You in My Wilderness is her most accomplished release to date. As ever, her multi-layered vocals are the main event, thrown into relief by everything from stately harpsichord figures to clattering chimes. Her compositions are century-spanning, and as likely to be inspired by the Renaissance as by contemporary pop. The result is completely enchanting and richly spectral; we proclaim her queen of the modern supernatural.
On Monday 14 November, Julia Holter plays Shepherd's Bush Empire. Book now to explore the outer limits of pop music.
