The unpretentious and charming The King & Co is probably one of Clapham's best pubs, serving up a constantly-changing selection of the best in British and European craft beers and ciders in stylish, unassuming surrounds. With their kitchen manned each month by a different pop-up team, this month it's the turn of Wild Serai, the team specialising in Malaysian small plates and fresh salads that has been making waves around Brixton and South London for a few years now – pop up restaurants in London have a new competitor in their midst.
Most recently turning out at Cornercopia in Brixton Market at the end of 2014, Wild Serai are building a reputation for serving up the finest in fresh, flavoursome Asian street food, and their menu at the King & Co looks set to continue that trend, with everything from deep fried chilli crab with kaffir lime leaf and ox cheek rendang (a kind of caramelized curry) to belly pork wraps with sweet vinegar and lemongrass (the 'serai' from which they draw their name).
The team picks and sources ingredients directly from Malaysia – making their new pop up one of the best Asian restaurants in London for authenticity – they are keen to point out how hard it can be to get your hands on bintulu belacan, shrimp paste from a particular stretch Malaysian coastline, without local know-how – and goes at them with a combined culinary heritage that draws upon not only Malay and Nyonya home-style cooking, but also Basque, British and Portuguese influences. As well as their regular line-up of small plates and salads, the Serai team will be offering a weekend feasting menu (look out for their Madagascan King Prawn sambals), as well as weekly specials. Is this the new best Malaysian restaurant in London? Only one way to find out – catch it while it's there.
