Darjeeling Express Supper Club is a slice of authentic Indian cuisine in the heart of Kensington. Asma Said Khan moved to the UK in 1991 claiming she ‘could not even boil an egg’. But, after realising that living off perpetual salads was not an endurable state, in a moment of inspiration she challenged herself to master some of India’s most intrepid dishes.
Now she presents impeccably cooked recipes that have been in her family for four generations. The food comes, predominantly, from the Nawabi-Mughal school of cuisine, and guests are encouraged to pick and share with their fellow diners at large and inclusive tables. Asma’s passion for fresh ingredients and subtle mixes of aromas are perfected in her countless sharing-platters, followed by substantial mains. Asma's supper clubs have been hugely popular, but she also hosts brunches. Her brunch menu features Culcatta Chaat, Nimbu pani, Masala Chai and Kababs, followed by a delicately spiced Calcutta Lamb Dum Biryani, and finished off with two indulgent Mughlai desserts: Shahi Tukra and Gajjar ka Halwa.
If you're after a more intimate evening experience, Asma's next supper club takes place on the evening of Friday 12th December. As the menu suggests this will go far beyond any recognisable Indian restaurant. The Bengali Fish Malaikar, a delicate fish curry with fillets of Tillapia cooked in coconut milk, sounds delicious, as does her vegetarian Hyderabadi Dal, featuring tangy and spicy lentils tempered with garlic, caramelised onions, garlic and curry leaves.
Moreover, Asma’s homely set up and informal ambience ensures that the whole experience is a truly authentic Indian experience.
