For four days this October, Elefest will infuse Elephant and Castle with music, film, food and much, much more. Set up by Rob Wray twelve years ago in order to celebrate ‘one of the most maligned and misunderstood areas of London’, Elefest explores the range of creative talent that Elephant and Castle has to offer. The festival kicks off on Thursday 2nd October with an opening night gig at the Coronet with performances from Escapists, Movie, Lois and the Love and a DJ set from The Maccabees.
Highlights from Friday’s schedule include a scratch night at Southwark Playhouse, where extracts of new writing, physical theatre and comedy will be performed. Local restaurant Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec will host musicians, such as Italian jazz singer Stefania Arcieri and fresh talent from the theatre arts training school Italia Conti Academy. The Cinema Museum will show ‘Attack The Block’, filmed in the area, which concerns a teenage street gang that must defend their council estate from an alien invasion.
Kick back at the weekend at Refuel, a pop-up garden that has set up on an old petrol station. Refuel will host the Incredible Edible Southwark Feast in the evening; a meal of locally grown and produced food. Lively roaming night-market StockMKT will be setting up shop at Hotel Elephant from 4pm – 11pm on Saturday. Looking out for guerrilla gardening, live re-scoring of two films at the Cinema Museum, and treasure hunts.
