If you didn't make it to the inaugural launch of The Art Licks Weekend festival last year, have no fear – the showcase for pioneering young artists, curators, galleries and project spaces in London makes its comeback 3-5 October. With over 70 participating spaces and more than 200 artists in venues across East and South London, this new festival is a force to be reckoned with.
Launched by the contemporary art magazine Art Licks, the festival aims to support the often under-represented wealth of daring projects undertaken outside central London. With Frieze on the horizon, Art Licks Weekend comes at the perfect time to celebrate the creative energy and future of London’s art scene. The festival includes an artist performance programme – where for each hour of the festival an artist performance will take place in a public space across the festival map, an artist moving image programme, and the Workweek Prize which supports risk-taking projects involved in the Art Licks Weekend.
One exhibition not to be missed at the festival’s east London hub is Slate Projects’ impressive ‘Screen Space’. Featuring the work of eight emerging artists, the show explores the ways contemporary painting is responding to new technologies of image processing. ‘Screen Space’ shows that as painting begins to incorporate the visual language of digital screens, new possibilities are being created for the representation of space itself. Defying its predicted demise since the seventies, painting, it seems, is forever being reinvented.
