Georg Friedrich Handel may have adopted England, but England adopted his music. Messiah, an oratorio adapting passages from the King James Bible, is one of his greatest achievements. First performed in 1741, it has become a Christmas ritual, its ‘hallelujah chorus’ one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music the country over.
For this traditional annual performance, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorus under Eduardo Strausser are joined by soprano Ella Taylor, mezzo-soprano Angharad Lyddon, tenor Zwakele Tshabalala and bass William Thomas. So popular, this one, that it is performed twice in one day.
This is an opportunity to see the Christmas classic at its finest, and a likely highlight of the entire Royal Albert Hall 2022 festive season.
