It’s fun to find out what an artist has hanging on their walls at home. Their choices inevitably have something to tell us about their influences and tastes. Sadly, we can’t all go snooping around artists’ houses. But the Alan Cristea Gallery, on Cork Street, is offering the next best thing at its exhibition of new and collected works by renowned conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin.
Split across the gallery's two premises, no.s 31 and 34 Cork Street, this two-part exhibition will present a riotous array of Craig-Martin’s latest digital and screenprinted works, while also offering an intriguing glimpse into the art that has influenced one of the visual arts' greatest influencers.
No. 34 plays host to a beautiful new series of screenprints titled Objects in Our Time , each printed in vivid block colours and paying homage to a handful of the most iconic designs of the twentieth century: from urinals and soup tins to electric toothbrushes and tobacco pipes.
This gorgeous, technicolour loveletter to design continues at No. 31 in a sister exhibition which sees Craig-Martin step into his curating shoes. Master Prints selected by Michael Craig-Martin is a complementary showcase of 20th and 21st century prints from the artist's personal collection.
For years one of the landmark names on the British art scene, Craig-Martin's work as a tutor at Goldsmiths College saw him mentor Ian Davenport, Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Sarah Lucas and Julian Opie, among a host of others. He's widely considered co-responsible for the rise of the YBA generation in the 1990s, and these days he’s a Royal Academician.
It’s likely there’ll be some treasures here. Cork Street may the place to go for art that you can’t buy elsewhere, but this show will feature work that can’t even be bought on Cork Street. In this respect, the Alan Cristea Gallery stands out among its neighbours, with an altogether more forward-thinking outlook than many other Cork Street establishments. This show follows hot on the heels of the delightful Richard Hamilton prints exhibition, which opens in February to coincide with major retrospectives at the Tate and the ICA .
