For a taste of radical contemporary art this autumn, pay a visit to the Zabludowicz Collection where Saatchi New Sensations winner 2014 Charles Richardson is delving into the boundaries of male identity and contemporary existence. Heavy stuff, but Richardson's tongue-in-cheek approach, which is always rooted in his personal experiences, is electrifying.
You'll find the video/animation HEADBONE on display at the Zabludowicz Collection exhibition.
Charles Richardson artwork
You need to know that Richardson normally toys with 3D scanned images of the body, bound in everyday objects. As the camera swings around the subject, the figure becomes more withdrawn and appears like an emotionally cut-off avatar. It's a unique technique, which unites curious sources like baroque sculpture, national heroes and even the contents of Richardson's studio rubbish bin. Highly experimental, Richardson bounces between photography, film, animation and installation in his work.
Richardson first caught our attention when he appeared in the ICA's Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2015 show, a moment in the contemporary art calendar that usually signals the rise of a fresh art star. Now we can't wait to see what this multi-media artist has in store.
