Phillips Contemporary Art Auctions are always awash with megastar artists and the movers and shakers of the art world. But even if you don't have the cash balance to buy an Andy Warhol, we recommend paying a visit to the gorgeous Phillips Auction House on Berkeley Square where anyone can join the pre-sale viewing before those once in a lifetime works are put under the hammer.
Highlights
With 200 lots across the Evening Auction (29th June) and the Day Auction (30th June), there is a lot to be seen. Before the scrum at the Ai Weiwei Royal Academy exhibition, we recommend catching the famous Chinese artist's work at Phillips. Look out for the famous Coloured Vases, similar to the ancient ones that he famously smashed, and Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads, which is based on a series of 18th century sculptures that originally belonged to the Emperor Qianlong's Garden of Perfect Brightness. Another Chinese artist we'll be watching out for is Yue Minjun and those iconic sneering faces which grin from ear to ear.
While Bruce Nauman has taken over the Sims Reed Gallery down the road in Mayfair, you'll also enjoy the radical artist's severed Hanging Heads in the Phillips exhibition and there is even a Banksy on display which tackles the controversy surrounding the Iraq War and the oil industry. Ever popular on the contemporary art market, Sigmar Polke, YBA Damien Hirst and King of Pop Art Andy Warhol are also throwing their hats into the ring. Particularly thrilling are Warhol's Marilyn Monroe prints which are so recognisable, but still so thrilling in the flesh.
Catch a glimpse of some of the most famous names in contemporary art before they get swept up and disappear into private collections.
