Clickety click, number 6! For their first solo show the quirky art duo Henry/Bragg transform south London's C&C Gallery into a rambunctious bingo hall to celebrate the changing face of Britain's favourite game. With the rising influence of online bingo, the smoking ban and the commercial encouragement to fit in more games, the patter of traditional Saturday night bingo has vastly changed. Once a place to meet friends, getaway from everyday life and of course make a bit of money - bingo today is a very different affair.
Who are Henry/Bragg?
Artist Julie Henry and photographer Debbie Bragg have made a name for themselves tackling subjects that mean alot to them, like the rise of consumerism and problems facing the working classes. Their work is bittersweet and calculated, popping up in international collections like The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.
This latest project about the changes in the popular pastime of bingo was launched at London Art15 fair and now takes up permanent residency at the C&C Gallery. Faded photographs, films and worn carpets capture the nostalgic bingo hall alongside the razzamataz of flashing fruit machines. You can even pop along on Saturday 6th of June to the C&C Gallery Forest Hill to join in an evening of bingo with classic prizes and framed prints.
Step into the fragile world of bingo and uncover the melancholic grandeur of these once bustling public spaces.
