Julian Opie’s work is instantly recognisable, especially if you’re a fan of Britpop. He is the artist responsible for illustrating Blur’s album cover in 2000 featuring the four members of the Parklife band in his signature style of minimal black outlines and simplified areas of colour.
Alan Cristea Gallery London exhibition
This new exhibition at Alan Cristea focuses on Opie's recent editions, inspired by London, Seoul and even the French countryside. With time, Opie has refined his practice by bringing together a multitude of influences from Pop art to Japanese woodblock prints. However he continues to push the boundaries of painting by using an array of quirky contemporary materials: anything from inkjet printing to vinyl to LEDs. For this contemporary art exhibition you'll find new lenticular prints (printed images that give the illusion of depth) hanging alongside small sculptures, screen prints and a new series of metal wall hangings.
From dark figures walking in the rain to Southbank tourists and galloping horses, Julian Opie proves once again that he is King of observing contemporary life.
