Michel François art and style
Belgian sculptor Michel François plays with all sorts of materials, from ice, rubber and magnets to soap, sponges and insects. In recent years, it has been all about asphalt, the sticky black substance which you might know as pitch, which François has used to cover objects, make sculptures and lay entire floors. For François his work is all about these contrasts between the absurd and melancholic, the black and white of his materials. Breaking apart and coming together, his sculptures at once repel and contaminate each other.
Thomas Dane Gallery exhibition
His shifting shapes and intangible sculptures at Thomas Dane Gallery create an entirely new environment which become a stage for an inevitable dramatic happening. The ruinous asphalt columns and collapsed walls could be a post-apocalyptic world, as the lights gentle flicker on and off.
