Ruth Ewan Camden Arts Centre exhibition 2015
In her latest exhibition at Camden Arts Centre, London, artist Ruth Ewan is inspired by the French Republican Calendar. You might know the Ruth Ewan Tate exhibition to be found on Millbank this spring where visitors are invited to navigate the halls of the Tate galleries using The Darks audio tour by Ewan and Astrid Johnston.
What is the French Republican Calendar?
A decimal clock divides the day into ten periods rather than twenty-four, each hour containing one hundred minutes and each minute a hundred seconds. This radical-sounding idea was trialled in 1793 as part of the French Republican Calendar, the new official calendar replacing the Gregorian Calendar, and whose aim it was to bring the ideals of the republic into everyday life.
Ruth Ewan Back to the Fields
Months and weeks were restructured and renamed in collaboration with artists, poets and horticulturists, to reflect the changes in nature and agriculture. For Ruth Ewan this was an inspiring and innovative example of collaboration between artists and the state. Amongst the other Camden Arts Centre exhibitions she has transformed the Camden gallery into a living calendar, bringing together all 365 items used to denote the new days of the year, and considers the calendar as an artwork in itself.
