One of the most exciting design exhibitions this autumn, the Royal College of Art London’s GraphicsRCA: Fifty Years and Beyond
show pays homage to the school’s vibrant tradition in graphic design. Picking up where the RCA’s last graphic design exhibition in 1963 left off in the Victorian roots of the pre-industrial craft, this display champions the Royal College of Art ex-students and questions the future for graphic designers in the wake of radical social and technological change. At something of a crossroads, the graphic design industry has already changed drastically over the last twenty years, and we can’t wait to unravel what changes digitisation hold next.
RCA Archive
Our favourite highlight from the RCA archive, a fantastic untapped resource of work that is rarely seen in public, is John Pasche’s 1971 lips and tongue logo which we all know from the Rolling Stones insignia. Also look out for the David Bowie and Damien Hirst collaborator, Jonathan Barnbrook’s 1990 typographic experiment using early font design software and the design studio FUEL’s 1992 newspaper which has since worked with the likes of Tracey Emin, Peter Blake and Jake & Dinos Chapman. You’ll come for the Royal College of Art’s illustrious reputation, but stay for secret gems from the archives that you are unlikely to see again for another 50 years.
