Our pick of the best Serpentine Gallery Park Night 2014 might be Lina Lapelyte's Hunky Bluff: an all female opera in Smiljan Radic's Pavilion
Lina Lapelyte is an emerging artist and experimental musician from Lithuania. Her latest creation, Hunky Bluff, a special commission for the Serpentine Pavilion, takes the form of an opera, and uses voice and song as a means of storytelling. The event is part of the Serpentine's annual season of one-night-only events by young emerging artists, Park Nights.
What is it about?
Despite the anachronistic form, the characters that inhabit Lapelyte's operas – check-out girls, rappers, etc. – are thoroughly contemporary. In the tradition of the politically engaged musical theatre of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Lapelyte's operas are both entertaining and wryly condemning of the status quo. Astute lyrics combined with tight, unadorned musical ensemble are cool and calculated, allowing moments of lyricism to burst through. Hunky Bluff is based on songs originally written for male castrati voices, however the cast will be comprised entirely of low female voices.
The Details
Hunky Bluff will take place in the intimate and unique setting of Smiljan Radić's Serpentine Pavilion, a futuristic, fibreglass pod resting on neolithic boulders in Kensington Gardens, making this an exclusive opportunity to see the pavilion brought to life and transformed into a stage for performance. Tickets are limited to the number of people who will fit inside the pavilion, so we recommend booking early!
