Post-Olympics and at a time when the nature of Britishness is not only up for debate, but hankering for change, The Print Room will be showing an exhibition of photography by Zadoc Nava documenting the changing face of the nation.
In association with B-side, the fashion label by designer Walé Adeyemi, the exhibition is a creative extension of the designer’s ‘British’ t-shirt. The iconic shirt features simply the word 'British', a label to be assumed by whoever chooses to wear it. Adeyemi commissioned this series, and photographer and film-maker Nava took to the streets to record an essence, if he could find it, of Britain.
The resulting series of portraits is evidence of the impossibility of such a task, and instead a celebration of diversity in its most moody and individualised form. Each portrait is a character, revealing only a scattering of associations, and each looking staunchly protective of their personal narrative. Expect humour, uncertainty and a legacy of Empire, but certainly not sameness.
As a rare intersection between fashion, photography and contemporary culture, this exhibition is sure to be a captivating picture of difference making a whole.
