Mark Wallinger: Self-Reflection, Freud Museum

160 years after Freud was born, Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger has turned the father of psychoanalysis on his head. Entitled Self Reflection, the entire ceiling of Freud’s world-famous study has been mirrored. Everything is doubled: the Ancient Grecian busts, the bookshelves creaking with Shakespeare, Goethe and Poe, Freud’s Green Chair and, of course, the couch.

Staring up at the room you imagine the hours upon hours of self-reflection it has witnessed. The study opens up like never before.

If you’ve never been, Self Reflection provides the perfect excuse to head down to the ,museum. Once Freud’s home, this Hampstead address is now preserved as an archive and memorial. Looking down the unassuming street, listening to the chatter of the schoolgirl’s next door, you can scarcely believe that this is where it all happened.
