Picking up from where it last left us (back in 1991) Twin Peaks returns to our screens with 18-episode series this May, courtesy of its original creators Mark Frost and David Lynch.
The original series was revolutionary and has since been considered as one of the most important TV shows in history. A heavy weight of expectation must be on the shoulders of the writers and the returning cast which includes Kyle McLachlan as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper.
The original series followed an investigation by Special Agent Cooper into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington and included the death of Miguel Ferrer (Albert Rosenfield). Its crepuscular, unsettling undertones, melodramatic, quirky characters and interjecting humour helped define the show.
Despite being one of the top rated shows of the 90s, its ratings declined during the show's second season, and the 1992 feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me wasn't enough to bring it back.
There’s a lot of excitement and hype surrounding its return, not least the cliffhanger from the last season's final episode.
Not a lot is known about series 3, but rumour has it that alongside McLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horn), Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs), Madchen Amick (Shelly Johnson), Phoebe Augustine (Ronette Pulaski), David Duchovny (Denise Bryson), Miguel Ferrer (Albert Rosenfield), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer and Maddy Ferguson) and Ray Wise (Leland Palmer) will be returning to their roles.
Twin Peaks is to air on Sky Atlantic in the UK after the broadcaster secured the rights to Showtime's entire catalogue which also includes shows such as The Affair.
The new Twin Peaks will premiere at 2am on Monday 22 May on Sky Atlantic and NOWTV, in a simulcast with the US airing on Showtime. The episode will then be available on demand and broadcast again at 9pm on 23rd May. Catch up now on series 1 and 2 via Sky Box Sets
