New to Netflix UK: March 2023
From the return of Idris Elba's dark, gritty detective in Luther: The Fallen Sun to Chris Rock's live, post-Slap stand-up show Selective Outrage, Netflix in March promises many thrills
UK Netflix release date: Friday 10 March
At last, it’s arrived: the Luther movie. The original detective series from Neil Cross started in 2010, and became one of the darkest in the genre: weaving in elements of London-based horror with the gritty strength of DCI John Luther. It was also the role that pushed Idris Elba into the running to be the next Bond, for a time. And who can forget Ruth Wilson as the slithery psychopath, Alice?
Taking place after the events of series five, The Fallen Sun begins with Luther (Elba) behind bars. And at a very inconvenient time, too. The data-harvesting serial
killer David Robey, played by Andy Serkis, plagues London with blackmail and murder. Haunted by Robey and his continued rampage across the capital city, Luther decides to break out of
prison and finish the job. Also stars Cynthia Erivo.
Fall
UK Netflix release date: Thursday 2 March
Film is an excellent medium to capitalise on acrophobia – think of Philippe Petit’s Twin Towers stunt recreated in The Walk or Alex Honnold scaling El Capitan without a rope in Free Solo. Scott Mann’s new film Fall attempts to emulate those nightmarish fears with a fictional and far sillier premise, but one that still drenches your palms.
One year after her husband died from a climbing accident, Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) is still grieving. But her best friend Hunter (Virginia Gardner) is determined to
pull her out of this misery… by recommending an ambitious climb, scaling a
2,000-ft radio tower in the middle of nowhere. Becky
is understandably reluctant, but decides to join in. Things go well… until they don't. When
they reach the top of the tower, the ladder falls away and mobile phone signals vanish. Now, they have to figure out how to descend without dying.
Shadow and Bone, season 2
UK Netflix release date: Thursday 16 March
In the current streaming climate, the second season of a Netflix Original is like a godsend. But a recommission is no guarantee of a future either. Once Netflix drops episodes of Shadow and Bone, season two, will its cancellation be imminent? These decisions are hard to predict. Maybe it's best to enjoy the show while it lasts.
The high fantasy world of Shadow and Bone consists of enemy nations, magic powers, and a dark schism that swallows all those who dare to enter. The latter is
called The Shadow Fold, and the Sun Summoner Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) must bring it down to
save her home country, Ravka, from ruin. But her old flame General Kirigan (Ben Barnes),
having entered The Fold, turns evil and conjures an army of shadow monsters to complete what he started.
MH370: The Plane That Disappeared
UK Netflix release date: Wednesday 8 March
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for nearly 10 years, the 2014 MH370 flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing continues to fly in the imaginations of many around the world. Various bits of debris have washed ashore, but the plane itself – carrying 239 passengers – still hasn’t been found. It’s one of the great modern mysteries, inspiring plentiful theories that involve a collective loss of oxygen, a terrorist hijacking, or a rogue pilot on a murder-suicide mission. With all the advances in technology, how did MH370 vanish with barely a trace?
The
new three-part Netflix documentary MH370: The Plane That Disappeared
ponders these questions: reconstructing the events on the flight and
interviewing scientists, journalists and family members of passengers to
examine every theory.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage
UK Netflix release date: Sunday 5 March
We’re coming up to the one-year anniversary of Slapgate at the 2022 Academy Awards, where Will Smith hit the presenter Chris Rock live on air. As well as birthing a variety of memes, the internet flooded with op-eds – taking both sides – about the shocking Slap, discussing sexism, racism, and ableism. The social media discourse seemed to descend into choosing between Team Rock and Team Smith.
Now,
Rock is back for a Netflix first: a live stand-up show. Is the liveness of Selective Outrage a
deliberate poke at the televisual event of the decade? Well, it's safe to say he won’t
be dodging the pop-culture elephant in the room. And considering Netflix's history of backing controversial shows by stand-up comedians such as Jimmy Carr, Dave
Chappelle and Ricky Gervais, prepare for another flood of think pieces and
social media scandals after Selective Outrage goes out.
