Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 2) is used to playing the girl who doesn’t fit in. Now, she looks to be a vividly sullen, excitable, lusty Dickinson – channelling her misfit performance from The Edge of Seventeen into this new, more significant role.
In last year's Wild Nights with Emily, viewers have already seen a different side to Dickinson. But the main, novel, attraction of this new series is its funky, contemporary style. Dickinson is known for being ahead of her time, and writer/creator Alena Smith looks to project that mentality outwards.
We get to see feisty Em getting down on the dance floor to electronic beats, making peace signs and sticking her tongue out as if she’s in a selfie booth. We always knew Dickinson was different, but now she's being dramatised in the best possible way.
We predict this will be a smash hit with young watchers, as well as poetically inclined adults. Dickinson actually gets to escape her time, and the result looks liberating.
