Over two decades have been and gone since Bill Clinton denied having 'sexual relations' with Monica Lewinsky, in one of the most shattering political scandals in American history. So it’s surprising that such a major event of the '90s has yet to get the screen treatment – that is, until now. The impeachment trial which tarnished Clinton's presidency will undoubtedly become the talking point of the office, as it plays out once again in the third season true crime anthology American Crime Story.

Impeachment: American Crime Story will draw from Jeffrey Toobin's book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, which suggests an analytical, in-depth portrayal of events akin to the show’s prior seasons on the OJ Simpson trial and the murder of Gianni Versace at the hands of serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

Casting details are sparse for now, with no word on who will be playing the former US president, but Lewinsky, the 22-year-old intern who shook the White House, will be portrayed by Beanie Feldstein. The actress has played to her strengths in comedy, portraying headstrong teens navigating the terrain of high school in Lady Bird and Booksmart. American Crime Story sees Feldstein’s first foray into drama, and it’s an enticing prospect to watch her explore new avenues in what is already an exciting career.

Joining Feldstein are American Crime Story veterans Sarah Paulson as civil servant Linda Tripp, and Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones, the state employee who sued Clinton for sexual harassment.

From the information that has been revealed so far, it appears that the women of the scandal will be the primary focus of the season. A fresh perspective is just what the show needs to fascinate a new generation of armchair detectives.
