Feel Britannia: Richard Alston
SERIES: We ask choreographer Richared Alston "What makes you feel emotional about Britain?"
In anticipation of May 7, we asked our favourite figures in the arts to tell us what makes Britain feel like home.
Richard Alston, choreographer:
"Studying in New York, I thought a lot about what I missed about England. Music from Purcell and Britten, Tallis’s extraordinary Forty-part Motet, puritanically complex Change-Ringing in village churches, the sturdy churches of Hawksmoor, chunky Durham Cathedral, the magnificent Hammer beams of Westminster Great Hall - I came home."
Richard Alston CBE is Director of the Richard Alston Dance Company. He was resident choreographer for Rambert and is Artistic Director of The Place.
