The Associates: Schechter, Prince, Pite, Sadler's Wells
Three Sadler’s Wells Associate choreographers present much anticipated new works in a programme that reflects a diverse and dynamic contemporary world.
Canadian artist Crystal Pite’s lyric movement finds expression in A Picture of You Falling, a short work that is part of a wider performance called The You Show (2010), the product of Pite’s fascination with familiar storylines and the body’s role in giving them shape. A passionate pas-de-deux between a man and a woman, it encompasses repeated narratives that move across cultures and generations. And maybe the sound of your heart hitting the floor can be heard too.
The Barbarians in Love is the first of three new short works by the British-based Israeli Hofesh Shechter, which will premiere throughout the 2014-15 season. This first piece gives intimate insights into how the dancers’ movement develops together with Shechter's work as a choreographer. Here music by baroque composers is at the heart of the creative process, bringing a measure of mathematical precision to the passion of the Shechterian world.
Completing the bill is a new work by Kate Prince, a choreographer who’s been instrumental in structuring street hip-hop for the stage. SMILE takes its inspiration from the song of the same name originally composed by Charlie Chaplin, and seeks to look behind the smiling face of one of the world’s greatest entertainers. The piece is performed by the Swedish dancer Tommy Franzén, a member of Prince’s hugely successful ZooNation hip hop troupe who attracted national attention as a contestant in dance competition So You Think You Can Dance.
