It's a time for curling up and staying warm with nothing but the pages of your trusted companion for company. These recommendations will ensure that you pick a good one. Happy reading.
Pulitzer Prizewinning author Jeffrey Eugenides (The Virgin Suicides, Middlesex) has his first collection of short stories out this autumn. Fresh Complaint contains two new tales, as well as work previously published in magazines and journals from the 1980s until now. Gritty, short and thoroughly immersed in the thoughts of their protagonists, Eugenides' stories show that he is a master modern writer.
In new story, 'Baster', Thomasina has strict requirements for a sperm donor, much to the consternation of her ex-boyfriend Wally who finds himself falling short. In 'Air Mail', a young American searches for enlightenment in Thailand during a comically bad bout of diarrhea on 'a total fucking paradise'.
Humanity, in the grip of capitalism and aching for meaning, fuels Eugenides stories in all their despicable droves.
